A BaZi chart is laid out as four columns, or "pillars" — one each for the year, month, day, and hour you were born. Each pillar has two characters stacked on top of one another:
- The top character is a Heavenly Stem — one of ten, tied to the Five Elements and to Yin or Yang.
- The bottom character is an Earthly Branch — one of twelve, each linked to a Chinese zodiac animal.
