How I Ching Divination Works: Two Real-Life Readings for Love and Business

I Ching divination is a way of reading the pattern of a specific situation through a hexagram, its trigrams, and—when relevant—its individual lines.

If you are familiar with Tarot or astrology, the basic idea may feel familiar: you begin with a question, and the reading reflects the dynamics surrounding that question.

In the form of I Ching divination used here, a Taoist master opens the altar, focuses on the question, and casts a hexagram specifically for that matter.

Instead of drawing cards, the I Ching produces a hexagram—a six-line figure made from Yin and Yang lines. Rather than offering a fixed “good” or “bad” verdict, the hexagram reveals the pattern of the situation: what is supporting it, what is creating tension, and where things may be heading.

If you are new to the I Ching, start with our guide What Is the I Ching? From Yin and Yang to the Eight Trigrams and 64 Hexagrams to understand how hexagrams, trigrams, and lines fit together.

The same hexagram can take on very different meanings depending on the question. A reading about marriage may focus on emotional dynamics and commitment, while the same hexagram asked about career or business may point to timing, relationships, or practical circumstances.

How an I Ching Reading Works:

  • A specific question is asked.
  • The Taoist master casts a hexagram for that question.
  • The overall hexagram reveals the broader pattern of the situation.
  • The upper and lower trigrams add another layer of meaning.
  • If the reading points to a specific line, its position and Line Statement bring the interpretation into sharper focus.

This is why I Ching interpretation is never simply a matter of looking up a hexagram and applying a fixed definition.

The question, the hexagram, the trigrams, the relevant line, and the person’s real-life circumstances all need to be read together.

The two real-life cases below show how this works in practice.

1. I Ching Love Reading: Will They Eventually Marry?

A man came for a divination and asked:

“My girlfriend, Ms. Sun, and I have a good relationship. Will we eventually get married?”

After opening the altar and casting the hexagram, the Taoist master received Hexagram 9, Xiǎo Chù (小畜), The Taming Power of the Small—Wind over Heaven.

“The Taming Power of the Small has success. Dense clouds, no rain from our western region.”

Taken as a whole, the reading does not point to a lack of love or any fundamental incompatibility between the two.

The difficulty lies elsewhere: the relationship has a genuine emotional foundation, but outside circumstances may make marriage difficult to move forward in the near term.

(1) What Does Hexagram 9, Xiǎo Chù, Mean in a Love Reading?

Xiǎo Chù is formed by Wind (☴) above Heaven (☰).

Its traditional image is one of clouds gathering in the sky before the rain falls.

Applied to a relationship, the symbolism is clear: the feelings are genuine and the relationship has already developed, but something is preventing it from naturally moving into marriage.

Xiǎo Chù does not suggest that marriage is impossible. It points instead to delay, preparation, and conditions that have not yet fully settled.

The bond is there. The next step depends on what changes around it.

(2) What Do Qian and Xun Reveal About the Relationship?

In an I Ching reading, the two trigrams within a hexagram can represent different forces interacting within the same situation.

Here, the lower trigram, Qian (☰, Heaven), represents the man, while the upper trigram, Xun (☴, Wind), represents the woman.

Together, Qian and Xun form a complementary Yin-Yang relationship, suggesting mutual attraction, connection, and a natural bond.

The tension appears to come from outside the relationship rather than from the couple themselves.

This fits the broader theme of Xiǎo Chù: the relationship has potential, but surrounding circumstances may make it difficult to move naturally toward marriage.
Family expectations, practical concerns, or other external influences may therefore matter more than any lack of feeling between the two.

(3) Where Might the Resistance Come From?

The upper trigram, Xun (☴, Wind), gives us another clue.

In I Ching symbolism, Xun is associated with flexibility, responsiveness, and adaptation to surrounding conditions. In this reading, it suggests that the woman’s decisions may be closely shaped by the expectations and circumstances around her.

This does not imply a lack of commitment. Rather, it suggests that family opinions, social expectations, or practical concerns may carry considerable weight when she considers marriage.

The lower trigram, Qian (☰, Heaven), carries a different quality. It is associated with initiative, determination, and the ability to act.

This makes the man’s response especially important.

If he remains clear about what he wants and is willing to address the obstacles directly, the relationship may continue to move forward. If uncertainty develops on both sides, however, the relationship may remain emotionally close without making the transition into marriage.

The central theme of Xiǎo Chù is therefore: the potential is present, but the conditions are not yet fully aligned.

(4) I Ching Marriage Reading: Overall Interpretation

Taken together, the reading points to a genuine relationship whose main difficulty lies outside the couple themselves.

Marriage remains possible, but family expectations, timing, and practical circumstances may slow the process.

Because the man is represented by Qian, his willingness to act becomes an important factor. If he remains clear and decisive, the relationship may still move forward. If hesitation grows on both sides, the bond may remain intact while marriage continues to be postponed.

(5) What Happened Later?

In a later follow-up, the man shared that family pressure and practical concerns had become significant obstacles.

The relationship itself remained stable, with no major conflict between the couple, but there was little progress toward marriage.

As the pressure increased, the man also became more uncertain and less willing to push the marriage forward.

The later development closely echoed the central theme of Xiǎo Chù: the relationship remained intact, but the conditions for marriage never fully came together.

The feelings were still there. What was missing was the clarity and momentum needed to move into the next stage.

The first case shows how the overall hexagram can reveal the central pattern behind a question.

The next case adds another layer: what happens when an I Ching reading points to a specific line within the hexagram?

2. I Ching Business Reading: Should He Move and Start a Business with a Friend?

Mr. Qin was considering relocating to join a friend and start a business together.

His question was straightforward:

“If I move there and go into business with my friend, will it lead to better opportunities?”

After opening the altar and casting the I Ching, the Taoist master received Hexagram 58, Duì (兌), The Joyous, with the reading falling on the first line—Nine at the Beginning (初九).

“The Joyous. Success. Perseverance is favorable.”

This reading works on two levels.

The hexagram shows the broader dynamic of the situation, while the specific line reveals where that pattern is beginning to take shape.

Here:

  • Duì describes the overall tone of the partnership;
  • Nine at the Beginning focuses on the move, the launch of the business, and the earliest stage of working together.

So the reading tells us both what kind of partnership this could become and how it is likely to begin.

(1) What Does Hexagram 58, Duì, Mean for a Business Partnership?

Duì is associated with joy, openness, connection, and exchange.

In a business reading, this favors a partnership built on trust, clear communication, and genuine cooperation. The relationship between the partners matters just as much as the business idea itself.

Duì is also closely connected with speech and communication, making the way Mr. Qin handles conversations especially important—whether he is negotiating, resolving disagreements, or building relationships with clients and partners.

The message is not simply to “stay positive.”

Duì favors an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect, where clear communication strengthens cooperation and careless words do not create unnecessary friction.

If Mr. Qin can maintain that balance, the business is more likely to attract support and develop in a favorable direction.

At its core, Duì favors sincerity, connection, and harmony between people.

(2) What Does Nine at the Beginning Mean in This Reading?

The first line brings the reading into sharper focus. Because Nine at the Beginning is the lowest line of the hexagram, it represents the very start of a new situation.

That closely matches Mr. Qin’s circumstances: a new place, a new business, and a new working relationship.

The line reads:

“Nine at the Beginning: Harmonious joy. Auspicious.”

The Xiang commentary adds:

“The good fortune of harmonious joy comes from moving forward without doubt.”

The key phrase is “harmonious joy” (和兑).

At this stage, the emphasis is not yet on profit or rapid expansion. It is on how the partnership begins.

The line favors a start grounded in mutual trust, openness, and a shared sense of direction. Because the partnership is still new, there is room to establish that foundation before competing interests or outside pressures begin to complicate things.

For Mr. Qin, the reading is encouraging:the move has real potential, as long as both partners begin with trust and a genuine sense of common purpose.

If they remain united in direction and communicate openly, the new environment may bring better opportunities and give the business a strong start.

The message of the line is simple: begin with mutual trust, stay clear about the shared direction, and move forward together.

3. How I Ching Interpretation Works in Practice

These two cases show why an I Ching reading cannot be reduced to a fixed meaning for each hexagram.

In the first case, Xiǎo Chù revealed the broader pattern of the relationship: a genuine connection, but delayed progress because of surrounding circumstances.

In the second, Duì described the overall potential of the partnership, while Nine at the Beginning showed how that potential was likely to unfold at the very start.

This is one of the most distinctive features of I Ching divination: the same hexagram can be interpreted very differently depending on the question being asked.

A hexagram cast for marriage or relationships may draw attention to emotional dynamics, commitment, family influence, or timing.

The same hexagram asked about career, business, partnership, relocation, or a major decision may point instead to opportunity, communication, relationships with others, timing, or the practical conditions surrounding the situation.

Sometimes the main message lies in the overall hexagram. In other readings, a particular line becomes the key to understanding where the situation stands and how it may develop.

A full I Ching interpretation may therefore consider several layers at once:

  • the question being asked;
  • the overall hexagram;
  • the upper and lower trigrams;
  • the position of the relevant line;
  • the Hexagram Statement;
  • the Line Statement;
  • and the real-life circumstances surrounding the person asking the question.

This is what makes the I Ching different from a dictionary of fixed predictions. It is better understood as a contextual system for reading change—one that asks not only what pattern is present, but also how that pattern is expressing itself in this particular situation, at this particular moment.

The hexagram provides the pattern.

The question and the circumstances reveal what that pattern means.

4. Have a Question of Your Own?

The cases above show how an I Ching reading changes with the question, hexagram, trigrams, line position, and real-life context.
